Truck crash closes major southshore roadway

During the early morning hours today troopers as well as the Fall River fire department responded to a fiery crash as a result of a truck striking a barrier and bursting into flames on Route 79 South after the Braga Bridge. The crash severely damaged wooden scaffolding that was in place due to ongoing construction work on the bridge and essentially melted some of the steel support beams from the southbound deck to the upper level. The southbound side of the highway has been shutdown until at least tonight and the northbound side has been indefinitely closed until further notice.
